How the order of a story helps a reader understand what changed and why it mattered.
Every story has an architecture, whether its author designed it deliberately or discovered it along the way.
Story architecture is the order in which you let a reader discover what happened. You decide where to begin, what they need to know next and when to show what changed.
In business communication, architecture determines whether a message accumulates meaning or becomes a list of disconnected facts. A launch is more than an announcement. A case study is more than a testimonial. Each needs a structure that helps the reader understand why the outcome matters.
Three Layers
Surface structure is the visible sequence. What happens first, second, and third.
Emotional structure is how the audience should feel as the story develops.
Thematic structure is the meaning that emerges from the relationship between events.
In Practice
Imagine a case study about a booking form. Opening with a list of design tasks tells us what the team did. Opening with customers abandoning the form gives us a reason to care about those tasks.
Show where people got stuck, the change the team made and what happened afterwards. Use actual evidence for the result. If the team has not measured it, end with what was built and what still needs to be tested.
